Masterplanning of Lavapies: Madrid

Lavapies is located on the boarder of Madrid and is an area which almost seems to be left behind whilst the rest of Madrid redevelops. The site used for the mastrerplanning currently involves connections with schools, bars and educational facilities for older people. There is a real need to redevelop and redesign the area. The proposal brings across the idea of developing the area providing space for retail, offices, a hotel, school which combines mixed age education from primary to college education; and eco friendly designed studios. The masterplan of the site involves educating and providing jobs for the homeless and slowly teaching them skills which will allow the site to evolve. as more become trained in better building skills.

The site is designed to be very eco friendly, using wind turbines, solar panels, shipping carts and reusable materials. The design is to make the area more friendly to the public, drawing large companies into the area to bring money into a space where it is much needed but also to try and subsidize small local businesses to stop them from leaving the area. By opening up the site it instantly becomes more accessible to the public and creates new zones by bringing the street into the site at certain points.
